Hello! I am Peace Camp's new addition, Mag. I traveled all the way from Canada but since I am not confident in hangul, I shall write in English. For my first trip alone, I went with Sol at a Haenyeo because it rains a lot these days. GO GO!
It's only been three days since I arrived so I was a bit nervous to leave the house.
As you can see, there was a lot of clouds when we left, which means that the rain is approaching.
The first step was to go get a bus pass. I went to a convenience store and asked for one by myself. The price was definitely 2500 won but when I I gave the money, the cashier gave me back 1000 won. To prove I was under 18, I gave my apprentice permit for driving. It was probably weird for the employee to receive a permit to prove that I was a student because in Korea, they start driving way later.
This is the story of how I randomly got a discount at a convenience store.
This is me and my new purple bus card.
Sol said the bus ride was going to be long. Indeed, we had to travel 1h30.
The buses are very different then from Canada. In Korea, the buses are very big, comfortable and even have seat belts. It was interesting to see all the elders climb up the stairs. People in Korea are very small, so much that I feel tall sometimes.
After the long ride, we finally got off. Unfortunately, it was raining.
The museum's entrance fees are so cheap here, it's only 500 won per person. Another interesting thing, here they give you one ticket, it resembles more a receipt to be honest.
At the museum, they really explained every aspects of the haenyeos lifes. This is a reconstruction of a small village in Jeju.
The posters and explanation were mostly bilingual so I could read, but sometimes there was obviously more details in korean.
The cloths of normal haenyeos.
The next image explains where comes the colours of there cloths. The brown orange colour comes from a natural dye with the dirt in Jeju.
They displayed plastic version of food they would normally cook. It included a lot of seafood. One thing was different from the rest of korea, but resembled more my family's style. Since the haenyeos were busy they would just put the whole rice bucket on the table instead of serving everyone.
The museum was very pretty.
This is a video who simply explained their lifes.
This was an interesting fact, they make this unique sound when they come out of the water, since they stay underwater for 1 to 2 minute.
They even teach the visitor how to make their own haenyeo clothes.
Around, 1980, they were introduced to rubber, so their swimming gear became much more efficient.
Those women were also very brave and vocal and they helped their nation many times. This is why they received many medals.
With this boat, they traveled all the way to Japam. In fact, the haenyeos started trading with other countries before the gwul industry.
"Just keep swimming"
A beautiful example of a all korean text...
The haenyeos would heat themselves up in this little house.
SHOCK, the cups here are not cone shapped paper, but rectangle thin papers.
The gift shop is a must.
Painting..
Sauces...
Even without consulting each other, me and Sol bought the same postal cards.
Before going to eat we stopped by the beach. Apparently the sea at Sehwa is the prettiest. They weren't wrong.
We just strolled down the beach on Jeju's volcanic rocks.
"Sol and Mag"
There were also small sea creatures in between the rocks.
Very pretty view.
Time for food. After walking for a while, we found a noodle restaurant.
This is meat noodles, Sol recommended it and it was good.
Back on the bus for another 1h30....
In the rain...
While Sol was sleeping, I stole the phone and took this masterpiece selfie.
This concludes my first alone trip. I would recommend this museum, but it doesn't take very long to visit. Apart from the beach, there isn't much in the neighborhood. So maybe as a short stop in a full day course.
I had a lot of fun and discovered a lot today :)
